Margaret Kahle Carnes, 98, a resident of Pinecrest Manor, passed away Sunday morning, May 8, 2016, at Pinecrest, after a brief illness.

She was born November 27, 1917, in Duke Center, PA, daughter of the late Fred and Florence Everitt Kahle. She attended Duke Center School and was a graduate of Bradford High School, Class of 1936.  After graduating from high school, Margaret worked at the Duke Center Post Office.  She moved to Buffalo and worked at the Curtiss-Wright Plant during World War II.  In 1960, she moved to St. Marys to help operate DeLullo’s Shoe Store.  She and her husband bought it from Dan DeLullo and operated it under the same name.  She later worked at the former G. C. Murphy Co., retiring in November 1982.

On August 6, 1949, she married Robert Don Carnes. There were married at the Colosseum in Ceres, NY, on roller skates.  He preceded her in death on July 27, 2013.

Margaret is survived by a son, Robert Dee Carnes and his wife Patricia Bauer Weis of St. Marys; two grandchildren, Michele Wiesner and her fiancé Justin Greenthaner and Martin Weis and his companion Tami Principe; five great grandchildren, Alex, Jessie, Nicholas, Michaela, and Nathan; two sisters, Esther Best and her husband Gene of Coldspring, TX and Eleanor “Toot” Schwab of Duke Center; a brother, James Kahle and his wife Barbara of Palmyra, NY; and by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Everitt, Earl, Thomas, Ronald, and Philip Kahle.

Margaret was a member of the Shiloh Presbyterian Church and was active in their Adult Fellowship Group. She served with her husband as the Treasurer and Financial Secretary of the Church.  She also served on the Board of Deacons and chaired the Flower Committee for many years.  She was also a Past President of the Women’s Association of Shiloh Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of the Allegany Valley Square Dance Federation, Inc. and served on their executive board for many years. She was a charter member of the Bells of St. Marys Square Dance Club, Inc. and was listed in “Who’s Who” National Directory of American Square Dancers.  She was a life member of the Pennsylvania Square and Round Dance Federation and was co-founder of the Elk County Cloggers, Inc.  She was made a “Gold Star” for being a 60+ year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was affiliated with the John E. Wanamaker Chapter No. 376 – St. Marys.

Margaret was a volunteer at the Penn Highlands Elk Gift Shop and for the Red Cross Blood Mobiles. She also assisted with the Saturday evening church services held at Pinecrest Manor.  She had previously volunteered at the Christian Food Bank and in the Round Table of Pinecrest Manor.  She was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

There will be no visitation.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service to be held in the Shiloh Presbyterian Church on Thursday, May 12, 2016, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Scott Wiest, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the McKean County Memorial Park.
